In an exclusive interview on WWE.Com, Bayleys talks with Byron Saxton about what went on behind the curtain Pre & Post Match on the night of August 22nd, the night Bayley became the NEW NXT Women’s Champion!

“All I could do was cry. I was crying because of everything I’ve been through to get there, how I got there, who I was in there with, how many people were there with us, how important it was and because I was literally living the dream.”

These reflective words of Bayley recount her emotional reaction to winning the NXT Women’s Championship just two weeks ago. In an unprecedented event for the brand, NXT Takeover: Brooklyn represented the largest crowd to ever view a live NXT event, with nearly 16,000 strong packed inside Brooklyn’s Barclays Center. Even more astounding? The co-main event featured a much-anticipated match-up between then-Women’s Champion Sasha Banks and the challenger and No. 1 contender, Bayley.

“It was a huge honor,” Bayley told WWE.com. “It was an accomplishment in itself that the company would trust me in a spotlight like that. Sasha and I are officially a part of history.”

In what was her first trip to Brooklyn, New York, Bayley decided to forego the opportunity to sightsee, opting instead to keep to herself. The day before the match, Bayley’s activities consisted of watching tape, eating well-portioned, nutrient-rich meals and pushing through an extended late-night cardio session to prepare her for the rigors to come in less than 24 hours.

“In the past two championship matches I felt like I may have let some fans down who believed in me because I just couldn’t get it done,” she revealed. “I felt like my family just felt sorry for me because I couldn’t get the big one. I needed to prove to them and to myself that I could accomplish my dreams.”

Since making her NXT debut nearly three years ago, Bayley’s support among the NXT faithful has been nothing short of prodigious. While labeled a super fan for much of her NXT career, the San Jose, Calif.-born Diva continually displayed the one intangible that seemingly endeared her to the entire NXT Universe. Some might say it was that continued support from the NXT Universe that helped propel Bayley toward the moment that she would stand behind the curtain, just seconds away from entering the biggest match of her career.

“I was confident before I walked out there but so nervous that I was sick to my stomach,” Bayley remembered. “I couldn’t even watch the promo package leading into the match because I was so emotional.”

The pre-match nervous confidence would only be trumped by the glee of accomplishing the improbable. The moment the referee’s hand slapped three, Bayley shed her role as the proverbial bridesmaid, instead becoming the bride and, more importantly, NXT’s new Women’s Champion.

“It was one of the most overwhelming moments in my life,” the champion said. “It may be the most magical moment I’ll ever have in wrestling or life. Hearing the crowd react like that was something I’ve never heard before. After the match, Vince McMahon shook both our hands. Everyone was giving us hugs. Triple H, Stephanie and even my favorite Diva, Lita, were there to say how proud they were of us. It was just amazing.”

That night, Bayley celebrated her victory with a special dinner alongside her siblings, mother and boyfriend. Taken aback by the number of text messages and phone calls she received after winning the Women’s Title, Bayley admitted it still feels weird to see the championship gold in her bag.

What doesn’t feel weird is knowing that the dream has been attained and the mission accomplished.

“I want every single person out there with a dream, no matter what it is, to know that it is possible,” she said. “And it’s possible to do it your way, the way you believe in. Nobody can deny your heart. It sounds so cheesy, but Sasha Banks and I had the same dream since we were 10 years old, and wrestling brought us together to prove that anything you want to do is within reach! And it can be special. You just have to believe in yourself.”

Sasha Banks did a interview with Complex Magazine, and she had a few things to say about the rivalry between her and Bayley ahead of tomorrow’s historic match at NXT TakeOver Brooklyn!

You mentioned the match against Bayley. Obviously, NXT is growing, but there are still people that are going to tune in for the first time this weekend. What should they expect from Sasha Banks vs. Bayley?

What should they expect? They should expect the greatest women’s match they’ve ever seen in their whole life. That’s the match I’m going to have this Saturday. It’s crazy how far we’ve come, because me and Bayley started with each other.

My first real feud at NXT was against her, all of my matches were against her. To see how far I’ve come from 2012 to 2015, it’s almost full-circle that we’re coming back to this place and I get to have this match against her, and in our first Pay-Per-View outside of Florida, and it’s sold-out.

Speaking of Bayley, you said you guys came up together. That really shines through, not just in the ring, where you guys have really good chemistry, but also with your characters, which play off of each other really well. What is it like working with her, building up to this huge match? How is that preparation going?

God, the preparation…I feel like we’ve been waiting for an opportunity like this for a very long time. When it came around that me and her were going to have a TakeOver match, we just said to each other, “This is it. This is our spotlight. This is our moment to show that we are two of the best female wrestlers in the whole world.”

We just want to leave our mark to be the next Lita, the next Trish. Just to have fans remember us for a lifetime, and just to watch this match and be like, “Holy shit.” That’s what I want the reaction from the fans to be when they see this match. I want them to know that NXT is where it’s at, and we are making a name for women’s wrestling and we’re bringing it to the main roster.

To have this moment with Bayley, I say this a lot, there would be no Sasha Banks if there wasn’t a Bayley. We are legit superheroes, like Superman and Batman, I would have to say. We’re just such opposites that it works so well. We have the fans either liking me or hating me and the fans just absolutely love her. I can’t imagine the reaction when she’s going to come out. God, I have goosebumps just thinking about it. I’m so stoked. I feel like these are my WrestleMania moments, so I can’t wait.

WWE NXT diva Bayley is always hugging and smiling, even when she’s hard at work training.

“When I first started training, my trainer told me to stop smiling so much,” said Bayley, who first learned the art of wrestling from Jason Styles (Rogers) of Big Time Wrestling in Northern California. “It was just fun to me. I couldn’t help it.”

Styles said: “It’s actually a good feeling as a teacher, when you’re teaching people something that they’re that passionate about wanting to learn. From the get-go, she always talked about how she was a wrestling fan since she was a kid, and that really came through, when she started training.”

She is genuine.

Her enthusiasm, her passion resonates with NXT fans as one of their favorites, and she really enjoys meeting them, participating in meet-n-greets before NXT shows.

“It comes kind of natural being Bayley,” she said. “Watching wrestling already made me excited. When I was younger, going to live events, I was so into it and just felt something inside me that made me feel driven to do it; so when I go out to the ring, it’s a natural fire for me. I can’t help but smile.”

It’s not work, if it’s something you love, and Bayley truly loves it.

“Bayley is a dream chaser,” she said. “She’s grown up watching the product, wrestling, WWE, everything. She knows everyone, from top to bottom, all the history. She’s been motivated since she was 10-years-old and is finally here, trying to pursue the dream, live the dream to the fullest.”

Bayley’s ability, appeal, look, mannerisms stand out from the other divas, which is important. That extends to her colorful ring attire — another Bayley distinction — inspired by one of her favorites.

“I’m a huge Macho Man [Randy Savage] fan,” she said. “Him being inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame this year is so cool, and it’s in my hometown [San Jose].

And…

“His ring gear is actually what stood out to me when I first saw him,” she added. “He was the first guy I saw ever in wrestling; so that’s what hooked me to him and what got me into wrestling.”

Bayley continued: “I kind of base my gear to being very colorful, different shapes and a little bit of randomness, basing it off him.”

“The ponytail and the headband are from me, from when I was younger,” she added, “because my hair is so thick, and it’s always in my way; so I always had it up.

“My mom [Ann] used to try to make it all nice and comb it and put it in cute little things, but as soon as I got to school, I took it all out and just put it up in a ponytail.”

That did not please mom, but it led to now.

“Now I made the ponytail bigger,” Bayley said, “and put it to the side and made it my own trademark.”

Bayley, 25, also designs her ring gear, selecting the colors.

“Sarath Ton does my gear, and he knows me very well. He’s a huge wrestling fan, too; so he knows where I’m coming from,” Bayley said. “He’s amazing. I can give him the colors and kind of the idea, and he puts his own [twist] on it. It’s a team effort. He does a few other people’s gear here [NXT], too. He’s great.”
